Why SPF Makeup Alone Won’t Protect Your Skin

Christina Flach explains why SPF makeup alone isn’t enough sun protection for skin

Celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach breaks down why SPF-infused makeup needs backup — and what to use instead.

Everyone loves a simplified product that knocks out two birds with one stone — from a phone case that doubles as a wallet to a ring that doubles as a bottle opener. Convenience matters to consumers. However, convenience is not always the most effective solution, and San Francisco Bay Area celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach says SPF-infused makeup is a crucial example of this.

In theory, applying fewer products is appealing since it reduces the risk of clogged pores and breakouts. But skipping traditional sunscreen puts skin at risk for far greater damage. While a foundation listing SPF isn’t lying about its protection, Christina Flach explains that most people don’t apply nearly enough product to reap the actual SPF benefits tested in labs. Additionally, most people only apply foundation once a day, when SPF actually needs reapplication multiple times throughout the day to stay effective.

So how does one solve this problem? Christina Flach recommends several solutions:

First, a traditional broad-spectrum sunscreen is always a smart choice, especially on days with direct sun exposure. This can be worn under or over makeup.

Second, for those with acne-prone skin who want to avoid extra liquid product, powder sunscreens can be layered with an SPF foundation for adequate protection.

Third, Christina Flach’s personal favorite: swapping foundation for a tinted sunscreen. She recommends La Roche-Posay’s affordable, non-cakey ultra-light sunscreen, which provides broad-spectrum protection against 98% of UVB rays.

Regardless of which method is chosen, Christina Flach reminds clients that sunscreen needs reapplication roughly every two hours to keep skin protected. With the right routine, it’s entirely possible to keep skin looking radiant today and healthy for years to come.
