Healthy Hair Starts with the Right Routine
Celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach reveals the secrets to healthy, shinier hair
Beautiful hair doesn’t happen by chance—it happens with consistency.
As a celebrity hair and makeup artist, one of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What products should I be using?” The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Just like skincare, your hair deserves a routine that’s tailored to your unique hair type and lifestyle.
The products that work for your best friend may not work for you, and that’s perfectly okay. Learning what your hair needs is the first step to having healthy, shiny, beautiful hair.
Start by Understanding Your Hair
Before buying the latest trending product, take a closer look at your hair.
Is it straight, wavy, curly, fine, thick, dry, color-treated, or prone to frizz?
Once you understand your hair type, choosing the right products becomes much easier.
If you’re dealing with concerns like dandruff, split ends, breakage, or an irritated scalp, those issues should be part of your hair care routine, too.
Your Hair Changes with the Seasons
Just like your skin, your hair reacts to the weather.
Summer humidity can create unwanted frizz, while winter often leaves hair dry and lacking moisture.
I recommend adjusting your products throughout the year. Sometimes all your hair needs is a little extra hydration or a lightweight anti-frizz product to keep it looking its best.
Read the Ingredients—Not Just the Label
Expensive doesn’t always mean better.
Some of my favorite products aren’t the most expensive—they simply contain great ingredients.
I always encourage clients to look beyond the brand name and focus on formulas that nourish the hair instead of weighing it down.
If cruelty-free or environmentally conscious beauty is important to you, look for trusted certifications like Leaping Bunny or PETA.
My Hair Care Must-Haves
There are a few products I think almost everyone should have in their beauty routine.
Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is wonderful between washes. It absorbs excess oil, adds volume, and gives your hair a quick refresh.
Just remember—it shouldn’t replace washing your hair. I recommend using it once or twice a week rather than every day.
Leave in Conditioner
This is one of my favorite products.
A lightweight leave-in conditioner helps detangle hair, reduces frizz, and leaves it feeling softer and healthier without adding heaviness.
Hair Oil
If you regularly use hot tools, a nourishing hair oil can make a huge difference.
Argan, jojoba, and coconut oils all help smooth the hair, boost shine, and reduce dryness. The key is using just a small amount—you don’t need much.
Hair Mask
Think of a hair mask as a deep-conditioning treatment for your hair.
Using one once a week can help restore moisture, reduce breakage, and keep your hair looking healthier over time.
Products for Every Hair Type
Straight Hair
Straight hair tends to get oily faster because natural oils travel easily from the scalp to the ends.
A clarifying shampoo used occasionally can remove buildup and leave hair feeling fresh without over-drying it.
Choose lightweight styling products that won’t weigh your hair down.
Wavy Hair
Instead of fighting your waves, embrace them.
A lightweight mousse can define your natural texture while helping control frizz. Pair it with lightweight oils like argan or jojoba to keep your hair soft and hydrated.
Curly Hair
Curly hair naturally needs more moisture.
Rich conditioners, leave-in treatments, and styling creams help define curls while reducing breakage and frizz. Look for products designed specifically for curly hair that keep curls soft, bouncy, and hydrated.
Healthy Hair Is a Journey
There isn’t one magic product that works for everyone.
Beautiful hair comes from learning what works best for your hair and staying consistent with your routine.
Be patient, don’t be afraid to experiment, and remember that healthy hair always looks beautiful.
