Beyond the Tennis Court: Honoring Ken Flach’s Legacy
A touching split-image tribute featuring Christina Flach and her late husband, tennis champion Ken Flach. On the left, the couple share a warm moment together during a celebration, surrounded by flowers and soft natural light, reflecting love, partnership, and cherished memories. On the right, a professional portrait of Christina captures her strength, grace, and resilience. Together, the images symbolize enduring love, legacy, healing, and Christina’s continued commitment to honoring Ken’s memory through family, advocacy, and sepsis awareness.
Many people knew Ken Flach as an Olympic gold medalist, World No. 1 doubles player, and six-time Grand Slam champion. I knew him as my husband, my partner, my best friend, and the father of our children.
Ken’s accomplishments on the tennis court were extraordinary, but the qualities that defined him most had nothing to do with trophies or rankings. He was kind, generous, funny, compassionate, and deeply devoted to his family and friends. He had a way of making everyone around him feel valued, seen, and important.
When Ken passed away unexpectedly from complications related to sepsis, our family was forever changed. The loss was devastating, and navigating life without him has been one of the greatest challenges I have ever faced. Yet through that pain came a purpose: raising awareness about sepsis and encouraging people to become advocates for their own health.
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that patients and families must feel empowered to ask questions. We trust our doctors, and we should, but we also need to trust our instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, seek answers, ask for clarification, and don’t be afraid to pursue a second opinion. Being informed and proactive can make a tremendous difference.
Ken’s legacy lives on in countless ways. It lives on through our children, through the lives he touched, through the friendships he built, and through the memories we continue to cherish. It also lives on through the awareness efforts that help educate others about sepsis and the importance of early intervention.
While Ken’s achievements in tennis will always be remembered, his greatest legacy is the love he shared, the example he set, and the impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him.
I am grateful every day for the years we shared together and for the opportunity to continue honoring his memory. Beyond the tennis court, Ken’s story is one of love, resilience, family, and purpose—and that legacy continues to inspire me every single day.
With Love,
Christina Flach
