The Beauty Sleep Secrets You Need to Know

Christina Flach shares beauty sleep secrets for glowing, youthful skin on California Live

Celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach reveals her top beauty sleep tips for a natural glow.

Every day, ads for new beauty innovations promise to make us look ten years younger, create a flawless glow, or eliminate every imperfection. Today’s society is always looking to buy solutions to problems instead of building healthy habits that heal from the inside out. San Francisco Bay Area celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach admits she’s guilty of this too — but she believes that learning to care for ourselves mentally and physically, starting with a good night’s rest, delivers results no product can match.

Sleep can improve the immune system, help maintain a healthy weight, and keep skin looking youthful. Best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing. Here are Christina Flach’s top tips for the perfect beauty rest.

Turn Off Your Phone

For many people, the last thing they do before bed is look at their phone. While it’s tempting to get cozy and scroll social media, it can be detrimental to sleep quality. Blue light blocks the body’s natural release of melatonin and can keep you up for hours. Christina recommends reading a book, listening to a podcast, taking a bath, or meditating instead to help the body unwind. She also suggests keeping the phone in another room to prevent disrupting the body’s natural circadian rhythm.

Sleep On Your Back

Sleeping on the back may feel uncomfortable and unnatural at first, but it’s the best position for both body and face. Studies show that back sleeping can prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming while helping keep the face symmetrical. Christina suggests placing pillows under the legs and arms for extra support, along with a silk sleep mask that won’t irritate skin or a weighted blanket to promote calm.

Have a Routine

The body has a natural circadian rhythm it wants to follow. Creating a consistent bedtime makes it much easier to fall and stay asleep. It may take time for the body to adjust to a new routine, but staying consistent pays off significantly in the long run.

Sleep at Least 7 Hours

During sleep, the body naturally produces collagen that prevents wrinkles and maintains skin elasticity. Studies show the body produces twice as much collagen with seven hours of sleep compared to just five.

Create a Restful Environment

Lighting candles, playing soothing music, and investing in high-quality bedding all contribute to a space that feels relaxed and comfortable so the body can properly recharge. Christina never skimps on good sheets and pillows, believing that a great night’s rest leads to a more successful day.
