If your makeup collection has officially taken over your bathroom counter, it’s time for a vanity intervention. Pretty Girl Makeup CEO, NBC California Live beauty expert, and I’m Too Busy Podcast host Christina Flach shares how to set up and organize the perfect vanity space.

Here are her best tips:

Lighting Is Everything

Christina says that lighting is the single most important element of any vanity space. Natural light is ideal, so position your vanity in front of a north or south-facing window if possible and always face the light when applying makeup. If natural light isn’t an option, an Old Hollywood setup — round bulbs on the left, right, and top of your mirror — eliminates shadows and gives you the clearest, most accurate view of your face. Look for lighting around 3500 Kelvin for true white light that shows accurate color. If you can’t install fixed lighting, a Hollywood LED Vanity Light Strip or GlamCor Lights are excellent options. Keep your walls white so the color of your makeup isn’t distorted when applying.

Keep It Clean and Minimalistic

Let your mirror be the star. Keep the surface clean and clutter-free, and use high quality clear bins in drawers to organize your makeup, brushes, clips, and tools into dedicated zones. Style the space with a small indoor plant or a little vase of flowers to make your vanity feel finished and chic.

Label Everything

Storage bins with labels are a game changer. When everything has a home and a label, you stop wasting time searching and start spending more time actually using what you own. Add flat trays inside your drawers to prevent clutter and mess.

Line Your Products Up in Order

Add shelving close to your sink large enough to house all of your skincare and hair products. Line them up in the order you use them — this cuts down significantly on the time it takes to get ready. Deep drawers work best for makeup and hair tools.

Use Beautiful Glassware for Your Brushes and Pencils

Take your vanity organization to the next level by using champagne flutes and wine glasses to store your makeup brushes and pencils. Place your makeup brushes handle-down in a champagne flute for an elegant, organized display that keeps them easily accessible and looks absolutely stunning on your vanity. Use a separate wine glass for your lip pencils and eyeliners — and since these come in different sizes, try using glasses of varying heights toaccommodate them all beautifully. Not only is this incredibly practical, but it turns your everyday tools into a chic display that makes your vanity feel like a luxury beauty counter. The best part? You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen cabinet.

Dedicate Different Drawers to Different Products

Consider dedicating different drawers for different beauty products to keep things organized. Clear drawer inserts and dividers not only look beautiful but let you see all of your items at a glance. Keep haircare, skincare, and makeup products completely separate using small drawer dividers or partitions.

Give Away What You Don’t Use

Clear out products you’re not using and give them away in a cute little gift bag. Makeup is not a fine wine. It does not get better with age. Keep what you use and let go of the rest. As Pretty Girl Makeup always  says — sanitation is key. Dedicate a particular color or style cup for clean brushes and a separate one for dirty brushes that need washing.

Hide the Cords

If you’re installing vanity lighting, plan on putting in an outlet under your vanity and drilling a hole in the countertop to hide cords for a clean, professional look. Invest in drawer organizers to keep your tools off your beautiful counter space and everything in its dedicated spot.

Consider Floating Ledges

There is nothing worse than having an expensive serum tip over and spill across the counter. Opt for floating ledges or displays over traditional shelves — they keep your products from looking cluttered and prevent them from falling.

A well-organized vanity isn’t just aesthetically pleasing — it saves you time, protects your products, and makes getting ready feel like a ritual instead of a scramble.
